High quality carbon projects for high value carbon credits

There are overlaps between the development and energy sectors. Consequently, development practitioners have developed a wide range of affordable and appropriate technologies to address energy poverty. However, successful project types and technologies have often faced barriers that prevent them from scaling up and becoming widely disseminated. Carbon financing is an opportunity for development practitioners to overcome these barriers. And Nexus is a response of the development community to the challenges and opportunities of emerging carbon markets.

Projects eligible for Nexus funding must comply with strict criteria to secure and maximize the value of the Nexus carbon credits. Criteria include, but are not limited to:

• Projects which can demonstrate successful pilot phases and potential for large scale implementation
• Transparent management and accounting practices
• Creation of tangible improvements in people's lives
• Carbon credit verification by an accredited third party held to the highest industry standards
• Annual assessment of project performance, in terms of sustainable development goals, economic and social impacts

The New Lao Stove project: an exemplary success story

• GERES introduced the New Lao Stove (NLS) in Cambodia in 1999.
• The NLS uses 22% less fuelwood than a traditional stove.
• To date, more than 1,000,000 NLS units have been distributed across Cambodia.
• Since 2006 the project has been self-funded through carbon financing.
• From 2003-2009, the NLS project has generated over 769,000 tons of CO2eq emissions reductions. This figure has been verified by a third party.
• The NLS project is internationally recognized as a best practice. It received the Ashden Award in 2006, the US EPA PCIA Award in 2006 and the Energy Globe Award in 2007.
