Nexus’s first crowdfunding campaign raises $35,000 in less than 24 hours!

In less than 24 hours over 1100 lenders fully funded the $35,000 Kiva loan for Nexus-Carbon for Development member organization, TerraClear, to purchase a new truck for the distribution of locally produced water purifying technology to rural communities in Laos. The Kiva platform allowed people around the world to pledge support for the TerraClear social enterprise, which provides access to clean, safe drinking water to some most isolated and vulnerable communities in Laos.

Leveraging Kiva’s innovative crowd funding approach to micro finance, Nexus hopes to replicate the success of its first Kiva campaign to provide finance needed to other member organizations to implement and scale-up future climate-friendly development projects. “We are excited about new opportunities arising from our partnership with Kiva,” Nexus Executive Director Marion Verles said. “Crowd funding is a very powerful tool to fund social enterprises doing amazing work benefiting tens of thousands people in developing countries and we are looking forward to replicating this first success with other member organizations.”

In Laos, nearly half of the population lacks access to safe drinking water, causing widespread waterborne illness. Being the first expandable producer of household water filter products in Lao, TerraClear has already helped over 30,000 local families to access clean, safe drinking water.

“We are so pleased to partner with Nexus and Kiva in the development, posting, and ultimately the funding of this loan,” TerraClear Deputy Director Matt Nieswender said. “Not only will the financing for a truck help us to be more efficient with our resources as we deliver product, but the truck will also help us provide many thousands of families over the next several years with affordable clean water via the TerraClear Ceramic Water Purifier.”

You can learn more about how $35,000 was raised in less than 24 hours and hear directly from Kiva and TerraClear by registering for the upcoming Innovative Finance for Sustainable Development (IFSD) Conference in Singapore.  The conference will focus on measuring and valuing co-benefits and explore how innovative and powerful finance mechanisms, such as results-based finance, can support climate and development projects.
