History

IDEA is a registered nonprofit based in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It was established in March 1990 with the aim of playing an active role in contributing to sustainable development efforts in the fields of natural resource development, management and conservation. Its main strength lies in its Board of Management which is comprised of qualified and experienced professionals who are well-known in development circles. IDEA is also able to draw on its multi-disciplinary expertise and cooperation between government and non-governmental sectors. In addition to implementing its own programmes, IDEA endeavors to work closely with and support other grassroots NGOs.

Chief Technical Advisor, Executive Director:

R.M.Amerasekera has worked for nearly 30 years in the field of renewable energy technology promotion and energy conservation both in Sri Lanka and internationally. He was the Chief Technical Advisor for the UNDP Renewable Energy Project in Sudan, and a rural energy specialist for the World Bank and FAO.

Recently, he was among the ten nominees nominated for the World Clean Energy Award 2007 in recognition of his successes in commercializing wood-burning stoves in Sri Lanka.

He is now the Executive Director of the Integrated Development Association (IDEA), Sri Lanka, and is a member of the Asian Region Cookstove Programme (ARECOP) and the International Network for Sustainable Energy (INFORSE).
