The Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N) was established in August 1989 as a private sector organization and was re-registered as an NGO in October 1998. Since its establishment, CRT/N has played an important role in the promotion and development of appropriate rural technologies in Nepal.
CRT/N is the key implementer of the Improved Water Mill Programme, executed by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC)/Ministry of Environment with support from the government of the Netherlands.
The programme has supported the improvement of more than 5,000 of the estimated 25,000 traditional water mills in Nepal. CRT/N received the prestigious Ashden Award in 2007.
CRT/N is also involved in the Biomass Energy Support Programme of AEPC supported by the Danish and the Norwegian governments.
Under the BES programme, CRT/N has promoted more than 154,000 improved cookstoves across the hill regions of the country.
In 2005, WISIONS (Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy), Germany, selected CRT/N’s Women in Energy and Water Management Project as an example of a best practices project from the Asian region.
CRT/N recently completed a carbon offset project supporting the installation of about 1700 improved cookstoves in Chitawan district with support from The Offset Carbon Company (TOCC), a UK-based carbon offset company. The emissions reductions were sold on the voluntary carbon market.
